Scenario: You are at your agency and in the early part of the first meeting with Mr. M. Demographic information in his file indicates he is a 38-year old, white male, who is a practicing Catholic. He grew up in a family of 5 living in a trailer in a small town in Central PA. He works as a mechanic and loves cars. He likes to gamble when he has extra money. Mr. M is overweight and diabetic. He has been taking insulin everyday since being diagnosed about 10 years ago. You have introduced yourself, discussed any policy concerns, discussed informed consent (including confidentiality, fees etc.), suggested a tentative purpose for the meeting, and described how he could actively participate in the process. You begin the session by asking him an open-ended exploratory question, “Mr. M, I have read your file and would like to hear from you, in your words, what brings you here?” He responds, “I am facing criminal charges for child molestation”. He added, “I lived with the girl and her mother for more than a year. I paid the rent, the utilities, and bought most of the food. I thought things were fine. Now they have a restraining order against me. I can’t even talk with them about this.” Before you respond, you are keeping in mind social work values, the Code of Ethics, importance of being culturally sensitive and what you are learning about being professional. You know it is important to be self-aware so you do not impose your values on the client. You start to examine what is going on in your own mind. The word Divorce will lay the idea of the impossibility of Mrs. S trying anymore. From her phrase, Mrs. S expresses that she is ready to walk alone and cater to her kids. Therefore, the word tiered will best suit the situation where conflict with Mr. S and the kids makes her desire to move out. Besides words like experienced trouble, Mrs. S has been through a lot and thinks independence can be obtained after separation. I think that Mrs. S will agree and appreciate this response as it covers her feelings more diversely. The words in this response are direct in expressing what she feels and wants. I think she will be overwhelmed to hear that her thoughts have been communicated appropriately and there is justification for her wishes. A different approach to Mrs. S’s phrase would be judging the words negatively and using the hatred, irresponsible and less understanding would g beyond her words. She can be presented as a bitter person who cannot manage a marital relationship or handle any circumstance. Saying that she has a hatred for Mr. S, his kids, expressing how she is selfish would be going beyond in a manner that still is expressed in Mrs. S. She wants to leave with no concern of any consequences to Mr. S and his children. Question3 pg. 346 For the case of Mr. S, I will use words like unrest, frustrated, concerned, fed up, and done with the situation. These words explain his real thoughts of having tried enough to settle things but not anymore. Mr. S is frustrated that the children have been through a lot and thinks that nothing more is left. 3 As a social worker, I will elaborate on the unrest situation where Mr. S is no longer concerned about losing the job. He believes that is a very big issue compared to what is happening in his family. Mr. S is concerned about the children’s suffering and postulates the worst that faces them. Using words of emotional connection will relate more to the case at hand. The family’s care and compassion drive Mr. S, and the problems hinder him from having a peaceful life. In response, I will express the restless minds of Mr. S regarding what the children already know. He thinks that the children have been fed up with more than they can handle in terms of blame- he is blaming Mrs. S. Mr. S will probably agree with my response due to direct, expressive words that elaborate feelings, blame, and connect directly with his problems. Mr. S may, however, differ with the words, impressing that he is bitter and not calm. Question 3 pg. 349 With the consent of a social worker, I will use words including stressed, disgusted, hopeless, concerned, and submissive. Mr. S submitted that he has been pushed to the end of his ability by the problems facing him and his wife. He is restless about losing the job and concerned about getting a new one. Mr. S is open to any offer that may help him make earnings close to what he was earning before. I think that he’s hopeless of having a source of income, as justified in his statement that he sees his family as a mess that has made him lose his job. In this case, he is bitter with his family problems and wishes he would have peace of independence and change his word. For the change strategy, MR s believes that there is room for remedy and is willing to change accordingly. His words depict his readiness to forgive his wife and family and move on with a better life. 4 Therefore, I think Mr. S will agree and appreciate this response. He is on the move to make changes, and this response expresses the different aspects of his emotions and plans towards making the new move. This response concentrates on the applicable problem-solving process that Mr. S is interested in. Besides, the changes and shortcomings facing him in the due process of bettering the situation are responded to clearly. The selection of words in this response matches Mr. S’s selection too. This question asks for you to “go beyond” what Mrs. S says and then provide a second way you would go beyond. I do not see this in the response. Q-2- Again, you have provided words and rationale but there are no specific words you used to reflect the issues. The practice format is on page 345 and this will guide you with how to respond. Q-3- Again, you have not used the specific words you would say. Follow the practice format on page 348.
